Common questions
Is MerchForge really free?
Yes. The design tools run entirely in your browser, with no watermarks and no install. You only enter your email once, when you download.
What can MerchForge do?
Remove backgrounds from t-shirt designs, vectorise designs to a clean SVG or PNG, convert designs to halftone, add distress textures (punched out or overlaid), AI-upscale up to 4×, resize to the exact Amazon Merch 4500×5400 pixel size (or any custom size), and compress the PNG for upload.
The background is left inside letters like O, P or A — how do I fix it?
Letter holes are cleared automatically, with the Contiguous switch on or off. If colour is still left inside a letter, that area is almost certainly a slightly different shade to the outer background (a soft shadow, glow or gradient), so it isn't recognised as the same colour. Click the ✎ brush on the finished design, point at the leftover area and click to remove it. Flattening the design onto one solid background colour before uploading fixes it too. One exception: with Contiguous switched on, very large enclosed areas are kept on purpose.
Do my images get uploaded to a server?
No — the free tools process your designs on your own device, in the browser. The only exception is the optional AI file-naming feature, which sends a small downscaled copy to Anthropic to suggest a filename.
Can other people see the designs I make here?
No. There is no gallery, no sharing and no account — your designs are processed on your own device and are never stored or shown anywhere. The only thing MerchForge keeps is the email you enter to download.
I made halftone designs before 7 October 2026 — do I need to re-export them?
Only the ones going to DTF. Earlier halftone exports had a thin half-transparent rim on every dot (that is what shows up as semi-transparent pixels in Photoshop). Amazon Merch and DTG printers print those fine. Some DTF software prints half-transparent pixels as a dusty halo, so re-export those designs: dots are now stamped hard-edged at full print size.
Does the background remover leave semi-transparent pixels?
No. Everything MerchForge cuts — background removal, halftone, textures — comes out with every pixel fully opaque or fully transparent, which DTF and other print software expect. A design you upload with its own soft shadows or glows keeps them when you only resize or upscale it. If you prefer a 1-pixel smooth edge, tick Smooth edges in ⚙ Setup.
How do I download the vector as an SVG?
Turn on Vector trace and leave Resize unticked: the download is then an SVG that scales to any size. Ticking Resize, or the PNG switch on the Vector trace card, gives you a PNG at print size instead.
Does it work for Amazon Merch on Demand?
Yes — it was built for Amazon Merch sellers. One click exports print-ready 4500×5400 PNG files, upscaled to fill and compressed for upload.
What file types can I use?
PNG, JPG and WebP, at any size — oversized files are automatically scaled to a safe working size. You can batch as many designs as you like.
